Hammered Aluminum

When Barbra Streisand began collecting Arts & Crafts furniture, it became way too expensive to continue collecting, so we started hunting hammered aluminum, or what my mom called the "poor man's silver" that was popular in the 1940's and 1950's.  I always loved the hammered dish that mom used to put the Christmas dates (dusted in powdered sugar and stuffed with a walnut.)  That was the beginning. Then we went crazy and bought it on eBay, flea markets and thrifts shops. Long story short, we have way too much.  Occasionally I take out some favorite pieces and display them.  They seemed right after the ornateness of the holidays, simply "silver" hand hammered pieces.

These pieces all have clear stamps on the back noting their maker and often time the number.
These hang in my kitchen, and are among our favorite pieces. Wendall August Holmes forged created the Noah's Ark plate and the Child's Alphabet tray.
I should probably start parting with some of my treasured finds, but they each recall a memory wherein my husband and I went antiquing or thrifting, scoured the goods, and experienced that jump in the stomach, and said to one another, "Look what I found!  Let's get it."  The thrill and joy is in the hunt.  And so we'll keep these pieces and rotate them so that we can remember our adventure, and time together.  Happy hunting!

  2. What a wonderful collection! My grandmother had some hammered aluminum, and now I wonder what happened to it. Maybe my mom has it! I especially love the trays on your kitchen wall.

  3. You have some very nice pieces of HA. I especially like the Noah's Ark and the Alphabet tray. I have never seen either of those.

I started collecting HA 20 years ago. At one point, I had over 100 pieces. I still have quite a few, but have begun putting a few of my least used ones in my booth at the antique mall. I guess people have stopped collecting it in my area, as my pieces are not selling very well. I should try them on eBay, I guess!

  10. Wow! Thanks so much for sharing about your hammered aluminum pieces. I did not know the background on that type of serving piece. I hope you can find room to keep all of your pieces since yours is a collection in the truest sense...that you have memories behind each item. I saw your post over at "The Polo House".

  14. Oh my you have a great collection! I'm a recent fan of Wendell August and have a few pieces myself now. I love that they are made in the U.S. and truly hand made. I just visted their store in Pennsylvania and bought some trivets. My husband and I get all wound up when we go in there too! I think it's great that you and yours have had this collecting bug to share!
