Moss Rose Tea Party

Grannie Annie gave me my first tea set in the late 1950s. We may have purchased it at the Tic Tock Shop, the thrift shop on the way home from kindergatern. I blame credit my beloved Grannie Annie for my love of china and all things thrifting and collecting.

(Picture taken at 10:30 am. and on a landscape setting )

(Picture taken at 7 am. using no flash.)  Which time and setting do you prefer?
When I got my first apartment, I proudly placed my Moss Rose Tea Set on a little yellow shelf above the kitchen sink, then turned on the overhead sink light to see them in all their glory, only to have the electric short out, sending a shock wave through my arm and causing me to upset the shelf and send them crashing to the apartment floor.  Needless to say, my first apartment was less than fancy, actually pretty awful, but it was mine.  I did mourn the loss of that set, and in that moment I knew I was hooked on dishes, feeling their pain and joy.

This past year, I found a Moss Rose Demitasse Tea Set on Ebay and snapped it up.  So this is Ode to Grannie Annie!

Some of these pictures were taken Wednesday morning at 7 am, before I left for work. Then I sneaked home for a few minutes to take some pictures in different light at around 10 am (still kind of dreary California light - it happens sometimes).  Please let me know which light you prefer.

The 6" Coffee pot, and all the rest of the pieces are marked Made in Japan. On this table, a sweet pink toe shoe holds mints for after our tea or cocoa party.
At first I placed the roses in a little Waterford vase, but it was too tall for the set, so I cut them down and placed them in a tranferware creamer for better balance. Sweetness.

We're all set to go in the front of the house.  Big pillows in big chairs will assist the little guests I have in mind to invite.

Draped the table with a vintage pink damask tablecloth, with one napkin covering the tabletop.  Oops on the ironing!

MOSS ROSE - Demitasse Tea Set This is a beautiful antique Gilded Porcelain Demitasse Coffee or Tea Set, decorated with pink roses and rosebuds with green, pink and blue leaves and stems, on a glossy white porcelain background with gold trim. The rose designs are repeated on the backs of all the pieces, as smaller versions of the front rose sprigs. . The sugar dish is 3.5" tall to the tip of the cover and 5" from handle to handle. The Cream Pitcher is 3.25" tall to the tip of its spout. The footed cups are 1.5" tall and 2.75" across the top. The saucer plates are 4.5" across.

  7. Your Grannie Annie would be so proud to know you've blamed your passion for collecting china on her!! Your sweet tea party looks enchanting and the ballet slipper sets it off so well.
I like the second photo taken at 7am. The lighting is so soft and kind of washed with a rosy glow.

  8. I so love your tea set. I hope someday I could have those. For the lighting I kind to like the last 5 photos. It has a soft shadowy tone on it. Thanks for the visit and a new follower here. _^

  9. Hi CJ,

This little teascape/tablescape is awesome!! So many things to love. I always adore pale pink linens; to my thinking that is so elegant. Then your Moss Rose tea set is beautiful. I'm so sorry you lost the original, but glad you were able to find another. The roses look lovely in the transferware creamer, and the ballet slipper is an ingenious touch! I can't decide which light setting I like best; I think they're all pretty in their own way.

Thanks for sharing and have a great weekend!

  10. I completely understand the pain you felt when you lost those pieces, it is heartbreaking when that happens, and I am so happy you found this set. I did the same thing, and collected my grandmothers china, silver and crystal...I am the youngest of 5 kids, so all of my grandmothers things went to the older children. It just blesses my heart to have the same china/silver/crystal as her, even thought it wasn't her actual set, I still think she would be pleased. The lighting is beautiful both ways, I think its good that you included both, one is fresh and crisp the other soft and romantic. Your arrangement is just beautiful and thank you for sharing such a wonderful story.

  11. I love the rose tea set with matching roses, so cute and elegant. I think the little guests will enjoy it! Thanks for checking out my blog. I am brand new to blogging and appreciate any input. I will try to make it back for your R&R party! Oh and I think the earlier photos are clearer, but I like the warmer colors of the photos taken later.

  14. What a gorgeous tea set! I'm so glad you were about to find a set to replace the lost one - although not quite the same, it still carries the memories! It's hard to chose which lighting I like best. The morning light is very interesting and I like the pink "glow."

  16. I LOVE your Moss Rose Teaparty. I felt like I was there. And I have loved strolling and scrolling down your January posts just enjoying your delightful blog. I don't think I have been here before but yet when I tried to follow you it said I already was. But I would if I am not.

Thankyou for commenting on my post about my daughter Karens Cottage. It means alot to me that you would take the time to come visit and then comment. I will share that with my daughter. She was so thrilled that I blogged it.

You also have some great recipes here. Its been a L O N G time since I have made that green chile and rice casserole but I'm going to do it this week. My husband will love it.
Thanks again for your kindness CJ and is so fun to meet you!

PS I see you have three different blogs. Is this your main one or should I go to the others?

  17. OMG..... I cannot believe the similarity of our stories. My Granny Annie gave me this identical tea set in the late fifties or early sixties! I cherished it, to say the least, for all the memories of our tea parties in days gone by. When I moved to Boston in the mid seventies, the tea set was lost in the transition and I was heartsick, but I never replaced it. Now, I have a little 2 year old granddaughter, Adelaide, with whom I have been having tea parties. It is something we both look forward to as our special time together, so I have been thinking about my grandmother's tea set again. Today, as I was returning home from an appointment, I stopped at a yard sale and lo, and behold, they had a moss rose tea set for sale. Well, I didn't have to think twice about the purchase, and I now have a replacement set also! Adelaide and I will have many happy tea parties using a tea set identical to the one my Granny Annie and I used all those years ago. Thank you so much for your site and for sharing your memories. Sincerely, Connie Jane (CJ)
